Discover the
AXL Difference

AXL Academy is a tuition free public charter school serving students in Pre K through 8th grade. We create meaningful learning experiences through hands on exploration, real world projects, and a supportive community where students are encouraged to grow, lead, and discover their potential. Together with our families, we inspire curiosity, confidence, and a lifelong love of learning.

Engage. Empower. Achieve

Founded in 2008, Aurora Expeditionary Learning (AXL) Academy is a tuition free public charter school serving students from Pre K through 8th grade. From the very beginning, AXL was built on the belief that students learn best through meaningful, real world experiences that inspire curiosity, critical thinking, and a lifelong love of learning.

Today, AXL continues that mission by combining Expeditionary Learning with innovative technology, hands on projects, fieldwork, and strong community partnerships. Every student is empowered to explore, collaborate, and discover their unique potential in a supportive environment where learning extends far beyond the classroom.

Message from our Executive Director

I believe education should be accessible to all and support the whole child, including physical, mental, social, and emotional development. Every learner should gain the skills needed to thrive in a global society, including critical thinking and collaboration. Learning should be cooperative, reflective, and connected to real-world needs, both locally and globally. Ultimately, education should prepare students to adapt, overcome challenges, and succeed in all areas of life.

Our Mission

Our mission is to deliver academic achievement, character development and social equity through an active instructional model and a strong school culture.

What Makes US Different

1

Expeditionary Learning

Learning at AXL Academy goes beyond the classroom. Through hands on projects, fieldwork, and real world experiences, students actively explore meaningful topics, solve authentic problems, and make lasting connections to what they learn. This approach builds curiosity, confidence, and a lifelong love of learning.

2

Pre K–8 Charter School

As a tuition free public charter school, AXL Academy offers families an innovative educational choice while meeting Colorado's academic standards. Serving students from Pre K through 8th grade allows us to build lasting relationships with families and provide a consistent, supportive learning environment where every student is known and valued.

3

A Strong School Community

One of the greatest strengths of AXL Academy is our close knit community. Our smaller school environment allows students to build lasting relationships with classmates, teachers, and staff. Families are active partners in the learning process, creating a welcoming school where every child is known, supported, and encouraged to succeed.

Come See AXL in Action

We'd love to meet your family. Schedule a tour, explore our programs, and discover how AXL Academy inspires students to engage, empower, and achieve.

My name is Christian. My daughter, Lily, has been attending AXL for three years, and my son, Jeremy, graduated from AXL two years ago. I am also a coach at AXL, supporting football, basketball, and anything else Coach A needs.

I attended an alternative school when I was younger that shares similarities with AXL, but AXL has taken everything good about that model, made it even better, and added its own unique approach. It has been the best experience not only for Lily and Jeremy, but for me and our entire family. Everyone at this school shows genuine passion and compassion for their work, their colleagues, and the students they interact with every day.

From teachers like Mrs. Mills and Ms. Kareem to Coach A and Mr. Assaf, the dedication is clear across the board. And especially our Operations Director, Emily Thomsen, who I see every day greeting hundreds of students by name with a smile.

AXL is a true example of what education should look like.
